Dr. G. Stanley Custer

Violet Custer May 11, 1916 - May 15, 1999
Dr. G. Stanley Custer Feb. 4, 1915 - Nov. 7, 1999 

Dr. G. Stanley Custer, a special friend and colleague to many WCDA members died on November 7. Violet, his beloved partner and wife, and also our friend, preceded him in death on May 15. We are saddened by their passing, but celebrate the part of their lives which they shared with us. 

Stan and Vi are survived by their loving children: Luise Custer, Katherine Pierce, and Steve Custer, and their grandchildren. Luise expressed to me the joy and pride which both of them felt when Stan was selected to receive WCDA's Distinguished Service Award. 

In an October visit with Stan, he shared stories and pictures of their early years together. He often repeated the statement that he and Vi had a "wonderful life." Together they touched many hearts and made everyone's life richer for knowing them. 

Last fall, Stanley and Violet gave WCDA a lasting gift. They made a donation to WCDA that has served as the seed money for NextDirection, the exciting new project that will come to fruition in September 2000. How appropriate that their gift will be used for this national conference for high school students who are considering a career in choral music. They will continue to perpetuate the art that they so loved throughout their lifetime. They will continue to be role models for WCDA members and for the young people who will attend the NextDirection conference. 

Because of their generous gift to NextDirection, WCDA is dedicating the conference to the loving memory of Dr. G. Stanley Custer and Violet Custer. They continue to give to WCDA in yet another very special way. Before his death, Stanley selected four not-for-profit organizations to receive memorial donations in his name. They are:

The love song that WCDA sang to Stanley and Violet Custer last January has not faded from out hearts. The melody grows stronger and the choir sings it with the passion that exemplifies everything that our dear friends felt about choral music. That love song continues to say, "Thank you Stan and Vi, for all that you have given to us. We love you."
