Junior High Repertoire List
Assembled by Polly Amborn, Bullen Junior High School

1. A Song of Angels, arr. John Horman, Hope Publishing, JR 223
This three part piece is written in treble clef but can be used for a variety of choirs depending on range capabilities. It uses 3 spiritual tunes and is a great vehicle for teaching independent lines in a partner-song style. A quick learn with many teaching points.

2. Canon of Praise, arranged by Hal Hopson, Hope C5004
Pachelbel's Canon is the main idea of this wonderful, singablepiece. There are independent lines and some wonderful phrases that the student immediately gravitiate to. A very accessible but rewarding SAB piece.

3. Charlotte-Town, arranged by Emily Crocker, Hal Leonard 47103022
A two-part piece that is ideal for building part-singing skills. Wonderful tessitura and full of musical worth and humor. The students love singing it, and they learn something!

4. Children Go Where I Send Thee, arranged by Emily Crocker, Hal Leonard 47103041
A wonderful fit for the junior high boys' voice, this TTB arrangement of the spiritual tune is a great vehicle for getting into harmony singing.

5. Ching-A-Ring Chaw (with Great Gittin' Up Mornin') arr. Linda Spevacek, Lorenz 15/1123 SATB, 15/1173 SAB, 15/1345H SA
This combination of two spiritual tunes is available for SAB or SATB voicings. A slow introduction moves suddenly into a bright, lively feel. There is a foot-stomping, hand-clapping section in the middle with some nice dynamic contrasts and unique rhythmic ideas.

6. Cindy, Southern Appalachian folk song, arr. Kirby Shaw, HL 08564118
This two part arrangement is a great way to begin learning parts as it has a familiar tune and the altos get the melody quite a lot. Parts also are canonic. It's fun for students to get involved with the hand claps and spoken parts as well.

7. Dance With Me by Charles Davidson, MCA Publishing , HL00124038
A fairly difficult piece for three parts with piano accompaniment. It includes a moving text in memory of the children who died in the Holocaust.

8. Dies Irae from Mozart's Requiem , arranged by Patrick Liebergen, Alfred Pub. 5786
For three part mixed voices, this arrangement is a challenge but worth the while. While the English setting is weak, the Latin is attainable and important. Much of the difficult harmonic material is given to the altos, and an accomplished accompanist is a plus.

9. Festival Sanctus by John Leavitt, Warner Bros. SV8821 SATB, SV9536 SA
T his is one of Leavitt's very best! Effective in both SATB and SA voicings, it has fantasic rhthymic ideas and a dynamic piano accompaniment that adds extra spark. Entirely in Latin, this piece will challenge but enrich. Always a favorite!

10. Festive Madrigal by Dave and Jean Perry, Shawnee Press EA0113
A two-part piece with some very singable lines. It will be a good but worthwhile challenge for young singers as textures and lines change throughout. The one concrete section of "alleluias" does remain constant. Useful for Christmas or general.

11. The First Noel/Pachelbel's Canon, arranged by Michael Clawson, Alfred Pub. 7731
Also available for SATB (7752) and SSA (7753), this three part mixed voice piece puts the familiar Christmas Carol in a different meter to accommodate the Pachelbel Canon pairing. The three hand piano part lends good help to some occasionally difficult harmonic ideas.

12. For the Beauty of the Earth by John Rutter, Hinshaw HMC 469 SA
This is a wonderful piece for either 2-part or SATB. The ranges are a bit expansive, but the soaring melodic line is so appealing that they won't mind! The SATB version uses quite a bit of doubling so that a choir with little SATB experience can find it accessible.

13. God Help the Outcasts from The Hunchback of Notre Dame, arr. Audrey Snyder, Hal Leonard 08740720
This is a lovely piece with a message of hope for those who feel outcast is also set for SATB and SAB. The two part piece works well with a rich accompaniment. The harmonies, while interesting, are not difficult. The message and feel for the piece is the hurdle here as dynamics and interpretation need careful attention. A wonderful secular selection for any time of year.

14. The Guitar Man by Audrey Snyder, Hal Leonard 423-07012
A story is told through the text of this easy but effective piece for two part voices. The ranges are modest and the lines are lyrical with an appealing melody. A nice introduction to two part singing that isn't your standard partner song.

15. I'm Goin' Up A Yonder by Walter Hawkins, arr. Martin Sirvatka, Boosey & Hawkes OCTB6898
This wonderful Gospel tune is set for up to five parts, but it is easily adaptable for choirs with less experience. They will love the melody both in unison and the call and response. Some good opportunities to teach phrasing techniques.

16. Instruction by Mary Goetze, Boosey and Hawkes OCTB6773
Written in five movements with text by Diane Vreul, this piece has a great deal of contrast and is an excellent vehicle for teaching 2-part singing.

17. Jubilate Deo by Emily Crocker, Jenson Publications 47110014
This SATB piece is not difficult, and the rhythm and infectious melody will keep the students interested and excited. The main passage in its original or slightly altered form comes back frequently. A fairly static bass line may help the learning process for choirs unaccustomed to SATB singing.

18. Let Me Ride, arr. by Roger Emerson, Hal Leonard 40312080
For the first-time mixed choir, this is a real find. The boys will feel "super macho" in this wonderful spiritual piece that works especially well as a closer or festival choice.

19. My Love and I, arranged by Sonja Poorman and Berta Poorman, BriLee Music BL131
This SAB piece incorporates two familiar folk songs, The Water is Wide and I Gave My Love. Everyone gets the melody at one time or another, but it's an especially nice piece for the altos as they are featured on the melody. There are long flowing phrases that will drive home the importance of correct breathing techniques.

20. One Candle by Jan Reese, Hal Leonard 08704722
This is a nice SAB piece for a winter concert that does not have a sacred text. It is a good vehicle for teaching dynamics and has fairly easy part-writing which is homophonic in nature.

21. Praise the Lord With Joyful Song, arr. Hal Hopson, Hal Leonard 4316010
This is a wonderful teaching piece which uses the early American tune "Boundless Mercy." The lines in the three part mixed arrangement are different enough to help in teaching but also have independent interest with some interesting rhythmic ideas. The girls have a nice variety of range while the boys stay safely in a singable range of a fifth.

22. Psallite by Michael Praetorius, edited by Henry Leck, Hal Leonard 08596704
A good piece for introducing Renaissance style. An a cappella work written with great voice-leading that just won't go out of tune. Students will think they 're venturing into a whole new world of literature, and they are! SATB or 2-part.

23. Seed to Sow, Hal Leonard 4032605 SAB, 40326206 SA
Available for various voicings, the two-part is a fabulous piece for those boys who aren't sopranos or baritones. The reduced and slightly lower range, however, don't make this piece boring. It begins with a chant-like tune and then takes off with rhythmic energy while getting across a positive message in the text. Instrumental parts are available, but the accompaniment track works well, too.

24. Shenandoah, arr. Mary Goetze, Boosey & Hawkes OCTB6257
This is a very nice setting for SSA voices which calls for some isolated divisi in Sop. I. It is a cappella, but the part-writing isn't prohibitive. A good, accessible challenge.

25. She Shall Have Music by Nick Page, Boosey and Hawkes OCTB6257
Two part piece based on the nursery rhyme text. Quite difficult rhythmically with lots of 3 against 2, but it is worth the work! Part of the Choral Music Experience Series.

26. Something Told the Wild Geese by Sherri Porterfield, Heritage (H5890)
This piece is written for two part voices or three part mixed (H1025) and is a wonderful secular addition to a winter concert. It is challenging with some fairly sizable leaps, but the overall appeal and lyrical quality of the song will be incentive for students to work hard. Text is by American poet Rachel Smith.

27. Take These Wings by Don Besig and Nancy Price, Shawnee A1743 SATB, D0312 SAB
This is a wonderful text for the end of the year, and the SAB and SATB voicings are both accesible but not easy. There is a lovely flute part and a soprano descant. A good way to teach phrasing and breathing.

28. The Tiger by Sherri Porterfield, Warner Brothers SV9314 SA, SV9154 3 pt. mixed
This piece is available in two or three part settings and uses a text by William Blake. The music connects the singers with the excitement, fear and dread of the tiger as it builds. The boys will love it!

29. The Wells Fargo Wagon from The Music Man, arr. Mark A. Brymer, Hal Leonard 08721626
The two part arrangement of this Broadway standard is in a wonderful range for young singers. The setting from Hal Leonard's "Kids on Broadway" series is true to the stage version in many ways, and the harmonies make this a challenging but fun piece.

30. Wondrous Star by Gene Grier, Heritage Music HV 194
This is an easy two-part piece that will give some quick success for beginning part-singing. It incorporates the carols Silent Night and We Three Kings of Orient Are.

31. You Shall Have a Song by Harriet Ziegehals, Hope Publications A577
This is a wonderful two-part opener. It is a good tool for teaching unison singing, phrasing, and breathing. There is an optional flute accompaniment that only adds to the lovely flowing feel of the piece.
